
Julie London (nee Peck) was an American actress and a singer who toured for more than 40 years. A torch singer noted for her gorgeous, sultry contralto voice, London recorded over thirty albums of jazz and pop standards between 1955 and 1969. Inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2001 was her recording of "Cry Me a River", a track that she had included on her debut album. London was nominated in 1974 for the Golden Globe Award as a actress for her portrayal in Emergency The Adventures of Dixie McCall. London was born in Santa Rosa to vaudevillian parents. Her first professional job was acting as an actress as she was employed as an elevator operator in downtown Los Angeles. London's 35-year career in acting began in film in 1944, which included roles for female leads in numerous westerns. She co-starred with Rock Hudson in The Fat Man (1951) as well as Robert Taylor and John Cassavetes in Saddle the Wind (1958) as well as with Gary Cooper in Man of the West (1958) and with Robert Mitchum in The Wonderful Country (1959). She signed a recording contract with Liberty Records in the mid-1950s. It was the beginning of her professional career as a musician. She released her final studio album in the year 1969, but was able to continue to make a name for herself as the female starring role of nurse Dixie McCall in the television series Emergency! (1972-1979) where she appeared alongside her husband Bobby Troup. Jack Webb produced the show.
